The Deer Hunt Essay examples - 966 Words

It is 5:30am on opening morning of deer hunting season and my alarm explodes into a racket that would wake an army. I roll out of bed and rub the sleep from my eyes. I only slept six hours last night because my family and I were preparing for the hunt, getting the guns ready, laying out a clothes-man, everything. As I throw some pants on, the smell of fresh pancakes wakes me up. It is at this time I realize the season is upon us. Since January I have been waiting for this day to come, today begins the annual nine day season that brings our family together each November. After stumbling upstairs I go to the computer and turn on Da Yoopers’ â€Å"Da turdy Point Buck†, the song our family must listen to before we head out the door and into the†¦show more content†¦We shut the engine off and do not speak again, for any human noise made will be heard by deer within a quarter mile. Trying to make as little noise as possible I walk to where I will sit. Along the way, I creep over a knoll and jump four deer browsing on small alders. Immediately upon seeing me, they streak through the trees; I stop and listen to their feet pounding into the earth, and realize there are many deer in the area and my chances of seeing a deer while sitting will be very good. After 15 minutes of sneaking through the oaks and maple trees I find the tree I will sit in. My father set the the stand in the tree a few weeks before my arrival. I crawl up and as I sit down it is just getting light in the east. I sit and wait. The lonely call of a great horned owl breaks the silence of the early morning. A few minutes later I hear the calls of a wolf to the north. I know there will be more howls and within two minutes other wolves start calling. They are talking to each other, telling their pack where they are and if they have found any food. As it get lighter and lighter I wait for the first gun-shots of the season, and sure enough, POW. The season has begun. I sit and watch the morning pass by, an occasional raven flies by calling to its family, and all of a sudden something catches my eye. I look to the south and over the top of the hill comes a deer, my first deer of the season. We live in a dynamic time when staying focused and on top of things are the tools to excel and guarantee success in both professional and personal arenas. Pursuing a graduate study and improving communication skills are a few of many ways I chose to guarantee my personal and professional success. It wasn’t easy taking the decision to pursue a graduate study, and like all major decisions in one’s life, it comes with challenges, which were of an emotional, financial, and organizational nature in my case. To facilitate success, setting goals is most commonly seen as the way forward. In addition to discussing setting goals and milestones, I will be exposing the challenges met in the road to success and the related strategies to overcome them†¦show more content†¦Setting Goals â€Å"Goal setting implies a discontent with one’s present condition and desire to attain an object or outcome† (E.A Locke G.P. Latham, 2006). In other words, when one knows he wants something else from life, he builds a map of his journey. In a study conducted by Harvard Business School on what constitutes a failure or a success for a group of similar background and education, they found that only 3% are successful, and 30% are moderately successful, the remainder are watching the world go by. The difference between these two first groups is that the 3% one had specific goals, whereas the 30% group had a general idea of the direction they need to reach but didn’t formalize it. ‘Setting goals gives you long term vision and short-term motivation’ (Mind Tools, 2009). When setting goals, one will often hear that goals need to be (1) Specific, (2) Measurable, (3) Achievable, (4) Realistic and (5) Time bound. The SMART objective of goals ensures proper monitoring and outcome. Short-term goals are the smaller steps to reach the long-term goal and can be seen as the first level of to-do list. In light of the above, I have taken some time to set goals that will help me reach my desired outcome of ‘enhancing my career in the health care sector over the next five years’. Insecticides include nicotine, rotenone, preterits, and sabbatical. Some have been used by humans for a long time. As early assess, nicotine was used as an insecticide in the form of a crude extract from tobacco. Nicotine’s alkaloid can be obtained from the leaves and stems of Nicotine Tobacco (Inupiat, 1976). Nicotine is harmful to humans though it doesn’t effect the plants when applied . Rotenone, the most active of the six alkaloids , is harmful to man but a very effective poison against various insects (Abbey, 1972). On the other hand , essential oils from eucalyptus and psychophysical were use as effective mosquito insecticide or repellent (Smith. 1996). A research made on the subject found that weeping willow (Saliva Babylonian) leaves contain essential oils similarly found in eucalyptus (Antonio, 1984). Pinups Insular, commonly known as Shaky pine, is found in Khakis hills and Motorman, in the hills of Burma and in Central Luzon. It is a valuable source of resin turpentine. It grows up to 15 m (1 50 feet) and has very fine, grass-like needles (Tree of the World). It contains alkaloid, which is an ingredient in most insecticides. A. Materials Half a kilogram of weeping willow leaves were gathered from the Philippine Science High School (SSH) campus. Two and Half kilograms of pine cones came from Baggie. B. Methods 1. Extraction and Distillation Forty grams of weeping willow leaves were extracted five times for 10 hours using the sloshes apparatus and titleholder as the solvent. Then two kilograms were extracted in five occasions for 10 hours each using the same apparatus and Covent as the extraction for the weeping willow leaves. After each extraction, the solution was gathered, and distilled for an hour to obtain the extract. The extract was then stored in a cold place. 2. Culture of Wriggler Stagnant water was collected from the creek and from the SSH fish pond. The water was placed in basins and was left for two to three weeks.
